Once we established the concept that the main attribute of a colour is its value, then we were able to push our colours out beyond "realism" into more expressive ways of painting. At the same time we sharpened our observation skills to concentrate more on the shapes and contrasts we looked at and less at the shapes we thought we should be painting (if you've tried it, you know what I mean).
Often all that close observation leads us to a process of refinement during our painting where forms are simplified and harmonised.
To help experience this process we'll ask our model to sustain a longer pose on Friday so that we can go through the construction and reconstruction of the figure as we observe new possibilities for our painting.
