Lucian Freud modelling technique

Next Wednesday we are going to look at how Lucian Freud painted his portraits. We'll be working on a relatively small scale using hog's hair brushes predominantly so that we can build up a nice impasto texture within the time we have. This is a detail of one of his self portraits....wow!

Then we're going to use this technique and palette to paint a statue, as if it were made of flesh and bone. It's probably best to stick with the Zorn palette we used last lesson and add colours if we feel a specific need although I guess raw umber would be an obvious addition. The challenge on the palette will be as much about paint consistency as mixing I think.

For your reference the artists we looked at last week were Catherine Kehoe, Benjamin Bjorklund, Lucy Stopford, James Bland and Joseph Ryan.
