Our conception of landscape has changed and historical painting movements have reflected this, but still our desire to paint the world around us remains.  This course will look at the rich history of landscape art to see how the environment around us can be transformed into painting.  We will be working from both resource images and directly from our beautiful surroundings “en plein air”, like the impressionists taught us.

We will look at how nature and architecture fuse under the light that bathes them and how we can approach painting the landscape in a sculptural fashion or as something more atmospheric.  I any case we will look at the mechanisms which control how our painting is interpreted and explore ways of controlling mood and drama.

No previous experience of landscape painting is needed although I suggest complete beginners take

the "Principles of oil painting" course to begin with.
