Figure modelling

On Thursday we are going to look at how to model the human body in preparation for our life model sessions after that. We've looked at several of the concepts already such as blocking in shapes for volume and contrasting the figure with the background.


This would be a good opportunity to try out painting on a PVA coated board to see how the paint flows a bit easier, especially if you are using oils. I've been practicing using cardboard that gives me a nice warm mid tone ground to build on.

I suggest we stick to a reduced palette; maybe burnt umber, black and white or maybe yellow ochre, red, black and white. I can already see how too much colour is distracting from my figure in the bottom picture so I'll want to reduce that and retrieve that chiaroscuro effect that is more dramatic! Get those values right, innit!
