Several people have asked me about choosing between the "Principles of oil painting" course (1:30 to 4 pm) or the "Advanced still life and figure painting " course (10 am to 12:30 pm) so I thought I would clarify the difference a little.
The "Principles of oil painting" teaches exactly that, in the way that I understand it. We do lots of exercises and sketches to explore key painting concepts like the negative image, relative value and colour contrast, which are the building blocks for figurative and abstract painting. Each class focuses on a theoretical aspect which we look at through art historical paintings and defined tasks which provide the practice to understand and change the way you can approach building up form, volume, mood and distance. We will also deal with practical aspects of technique and management of materials.
Even though you may have painted for years you may not be familiar with the way I try to clarify these painting mechanisms and so the course is suitable for people who haven't painted in oils before as well as those who would like to experience a different approach in painting methods.
Many of the people on the "Advanced still life and figure painting" course have done one or several oil courses with me before and so understand the reasoning behind the painting challenges I present and the terminology I employ. None of it is new but it helps to have already encountered some of the issues we deal with in your own practice.
On this course we will be constantly referring back to the principles of oil painting but also look at how to manage the development of a more ambitious painting and develop a critical discourse around your personal style. In other words our conversations around paintings will turn from how we paint to why paint in a certain way. We will still be doing plenty of exercises based on aspects of technique and theory but the objectives and expected outcomes of the tasks will be broader in range.
Much of the course preparation I do will be similar for both courses and I am always happy to work with painters with different approaches. Each course will be populated by people who we will learn from, whether they are new to oil painting or being doing it for years, who I expect to be able to motivate and help move forward in their painting.
