Still life sketching

Looking around the studio for another object to sketch I started on this circular saw... and just kept going.

I was drawn into ways of conveying the different forms and planes of the machine. The most interesting thing about the process is trying to use colour as a tool to convey volume and depth. The hardest thing I found was finding a satisfactory relationship between the figure and background.


The colours I put down initially to correspond with what I saw just didn't create any sense of solidity and so I had to carry on modifying the contrasts until the illusion of form began to take hold. I might go for the angle grinder next...
