The seated figure
Next week we're going to paint a seated figure step by step so that the figure we paint is integrated into the background. We'll be looking at paintings by Caroline Walker, Walter Sickert and David Hockney among others.

If you get a moment during the week try drawing a slow contour of these figures. Actually, painting a head or hands is no more important than a coat sleeve or the negative space around the chair legs. If we concentrate on the relationship of forms the figure will emerge!
We are not aiming to paint accurate portraits of the people but to give a general sense for the viewer to interpret.
