For our first session with a life model we are going to concentrate on how light reveals the form we want to paint. Last week we looked at the way to build up the form by looking at the light and dark areas of the statue. We'll try to approach Thursday's model in the same way, looking at the negative shapes to divide it into light and dark.
Although we can't reproduce the dramatic lighting in this Caravaggio or Moreau painting we will be on the lookout for areas where the background and foreground merge (lost edges).
We will also look at how we can use paint as a kind of drawing tool to create outlines of the human form like in this Cezanne watercolour.
