Course description

Still life provides perfect subject matter to explore how colour and shape relationships affect the mood and impact of the painting we create. This course aims to introduce subject matter that opens up new possibilities for still life painting that allows course participants to concentrate on developing their own style within a defined structure. We will be painting from still life objects chosen and arranged with the purpose of learning about traditional painting mechanisms that govern the perception of volume, distance and mood. The works we will study range from the traditional memento mori to abstract paintings that have taken this genre in different directions. Over the course I will be demonstrating using oil paints although you can work in other mediums if you prefer.
