For the improvers courses you should have some knowledge of handling paint and will be familiar with using art materials . Since painted portraiture has been mostly executed through oil paint the course will concentrate on using this medium, although you may prefer to use acrylics or pastels if you are proficient in them. In this first spring block we will be revisiting portraiture and moving from basic blocking to a more subtle application of values. We'll be concentrating on the edges of forms to fine-tune their shape and also explore the way colour can be an expressive tool to convey mood and character. As well as the focused sketches and studies that I will prepare, you will have the chance to plan and develop your own portrait. Discussions about photo editing, palette and painting method will be discussed and you will have the opportunity to receive the other group members' supportive feedback and help with your project.
